This was my first year teaching so I learned so many things. I learned how to set up a class at the beginning of the year, Open Court, Progress monitoring, and the list goes on. What made the situation comfortable for me was when I felt like I had support and was able to ask questions. I felt uncomfortable when I felt I was being judged.

We just finished plant journals. I decided to give it a try after watching Jenny’s class do it. I really didn’t think my kids would be able to do it or do it very well. Boy, was I wrong. I adapted it a bit by writing the day of the week on each page. The first time or two I taught them how to observe their plant and record what they see. We talked about being accurate e.g. using the correct colors, drawing only what you see, etc. Then the next few days, I sat back and watched. They ALL did an amazing job of observing and recording, even if it was just dirt and a stick! They were so excited about it, so I kept the project going longer than I originally anticipated. That was a good lesson for me in being willing to try new things and stay optimistic that the kids can do more than I think they can sometimes.

I feel like I have learned a lot of new things this year especially through our professional developments. The main one that impacted me was our Hanen trainings. I learned so much from trying to talk to children in different ways than I usually do and trying the different strategies. The most uncomfortable thing about it was being videotaped, but I think that was the part that helped the most…..watching those tapes. It made me feel more comfortable in being videotaped by the end when I started feeling more confident in the ways I had practiced talking to children. It was always very comfortable at the trainings when everyone could put in their two cents and just knowing all the teachers now as well.

I have learned so many new things through the open court curriculum. One of the areas that come to my mind right away is teaching the sime and onsets with the puppet. I have never been very good with puppets and I have not taught in this area before so it felt very awkward and uncomfortable for me. I am continuing to work on it!

I agree with Dianna, I’ve learned a lot through open-court this year. I thought at first it was a lot of time and work. I feel now that the trainings , planning and time is well worth it. I feel more comfortable with the curriculum and in turn I can teach it better. I always feel uncomforatable teaching new things to children. I have seen the children grow so much this year and I’m loving it and there parents are so proud.

It always seems to amaze me how much I think I know, and then how much I end up learning over the course of a year (or many years for that matter!). Let’s face it, we work with kids so we learn something new every day! Some of the things I feel comfortable with, like the very scripted Open Court, and then certain elements of the curriculum make me squirm. I hate teaching site words because I don’t feel like I have embraced a concept to teach them with yet. During my time at Rapid City, there were so many times when I felt like I finally had things down and then data days would come and it would make me feel so apprehensive again and I really felt pressured to teach my kids everything on the objectives and have them master it. I guess thats the beauty of teaching though, learning and challenging yourself every day.

I had an experience a tad like Julie’s I was very sceptical of the open court curriculum. The 1st time I read the progress monitoring for unit one, so many thoughts went through my head. I thoght yeah right, like a three year old is going to beable to point to the title or the space between the words. Oh boy was I wrong the 1st time I introduced pointing to the title to the children they were so excited about it. Of course they got to use one of the fancy pointers that we have. I believe at least 80% of the class was able to do it. So like Julie I learned that trying new things is ok and to stay optimistic and the children may surprise you
