About Us
Kalkaska C.A.R.E.S. is an Early Reading First program funded through a grant from the federal Department of Education. Our mission is to create early childhood centers of excellence in Kalkaska, Michigan, that focus on helping our preschool students develop four essential pre-reading skills:
- Oral Language,
- Print Awareness,
- Letter Knowledge, and
- Phonological Awareness.
As of the fall, 2007, we support ten preschool programs in the Kalkaska area:
- five at Birch Street Elementary,
- three at Rapid City Elementary,
- one at Northside Alternative High School, and
- one at the Kalkaska Memorial Hospital.
Our classrooms offer language and literacy activities based upon scientifically based reading research to ensure that our students enter kindergarten with the language, cognitive, and early reading skills necessary for continued success in school and life.
